"Lights Out" is a 2016 American horror thriller film. The plot of the film revolves around Rebecca, who tries to help her troubled brother Martin who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia after being convinced that someone has been accessing his thoughts. The film had two different endings, with one being more of a traditional Hollywood ending, and the other being more ambiguous. It was originally rated NC-17 for its graphic content before being edited down to R. In the prologue, a baby is being rushed into a hospital with the power going out in its floor, causing a blackout. In the present, Rebecca Martin (Teresa Palmer) arrives at her childhood home in Maine to look after her brother Martin (Alexander DiPersia) who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and has been hearing voices in his head with origins unknown. The last time Rebecca visited Martin was about a year ago, when she discovered he had been hearing voices and barely sleeping in addition to having a spotless house and deducing that her brother has been self-medicating. When Rebecca enters the house, the lights dimly flicker on and off. When she enters Martin's room, she notices a handprint on his window and a note on the desk that reads "for you". She then walks into their childhood bedroom and sees a man's handprint on a picture of her family from when she was young. As Rebecca attempts to get Martin to talk to her about his illness, she gives him a ride to get some groceries from the store. While they are out, Martin senses that someone is trying to kill him, and he walks into the road to stop a moving car. Rebecca stops him but causes another car to swerve off the road. When she gets home, she finds another note on her bedroom window reading "you can't keep me out" with an image of an eye. During the night, Rebecca hears noises coming from downstairs and investigates laser lights outside of her window coming from a drone. She then opens the door to see who is outside and sees that there is no one there before she faints. The next morning, a detective named Jim Copeland (Wes Bentley) shows up at the house to question Rebecca about the car accident from earlier that day. While he is there, he notices that there are multiple cameras outside of her home and discovers that she has been recording their conversations. Later, Rebecca also discovers a government agency has been monitoring her as well as watching over Martin. Martin begins to exhibit symptoms of an illness after having a seizure and seeing visions of a girl in his hallucinations trying to kill him. Martin's doctor visits him and tells Rebecca that Martin should be placed in a medical facility and should not live by himself anymore.
